5 Red Flags in Your Job History ... And How to Combat Them

5 Red Flags in Your Job History ... And How to Combat Them5 Red Flags in Your Job History ... And How to Combat ThemWhen employers screen job applicants, they might spend as little as a few seconds scanning your rsum before moving on to the next. If they see red flags during that initial look, theyre likely to toss your application and move on to the next candidate so its important to make sure that any red flags in your job history are addressed right up front. Here are five of the most common job history red flags and how to combat them.1. You have unexplained gaps in between your jobs. Why its a problem When employers see gaps of unemployment (of longer than a few months), they wonder what happened during that time. Did you leave the previous job with nothing lined up, and if so, why? Were you fired? Were you working somewhere that youve deliberately left off your rsum, and if so, what are you hiding? Gaps in your job history raise questions that you dont want on a hiring managers mind. How to combat it Be prepared to explain what caused the gap and what you did with the time. Were you spending the time caring for a sick family member, traveling, or volunteering? Be ready to talk about it.2. You look like a job-hopper who doesnt stay at a job very long. Why its a problem If your rsum shows a pattern of leaving jobs quickly meaning that you have repeated stays of less than two years youre going to raise alarm bells for most employers. Theyll assume you wont stay long with them either, and theyll wonder why youre unable or unwilling to stay in one place for a more typical amount of time. How to combat it First, if any of those short stays were designed to be short from the beginning, like an internship, temp job or contract work, make sure that your rsum indicates that. Note contract job or another explanation next to your job title. But if youre a true job hopper and those jobs that you left early were intended to be longer term, this is a harder problem to fix . You might need to rely on convincing hiring managers that (a) youre ready for stability and want to find a company you can commit to for longer, and (b) youre so great at what you do that youll be worth investing in.3. You were fired from a job in the recent past. Why its a problem Employers will want reassurance that whatever caused you to be fired wont be repeated if you work for them. How to combat it Practice an answer that briefly explains what you learned from the situation and what you do differently now as a result. Practice saying it out loud until you eliminate all traces of defensiveness or bitterness employers are going to pay attention to how comfortable you are with your answer and whether it sounds like youve moved forward.4. You dont have much experience. Why its a problem While you might be able to do the job if given a aussicht, the reality is that employers have plenty of experienced candidates who have already worked in their field. As a result, they dont have mu ch incentive to take a chance on someone untested. How to combat it This is where a fantastic cover letter can really help you. That means a cover letter that doesnt just regurgitate your rsum but instead really speaks to why you want this particular job and why youd excel at it. In addition, try fleshing out your rsum with volunteer work, to establish a track record for employers to look at.5. Youve been unemployed for a while. Why its a problem Even in this economy, some hiring managers look at long-term unemployed candidates and wonder if theres a reason that other employers havent hired them. Fortunately, many employers do understand that it can take time for even good candidates to find work in this market. How to combat it Make sure that you can show that youve been spending your time volunteering, building your skills or something other than watching TV and applying to jobs. Employers want to see that youve done something to keep up with your field during your time away.Alison G reen writes the popular Ask a Manager blog, where she dispenses advice on career, job search, and management issues. More than half of stay-at-home parents stop working longer than planned

More than half of stay-at-home parents stop working longer than plannedMore than half of stay-at-home parents stop working longer than plannedFlexJobssurveyed more than 900 stay-at-home parents (SAH parents) who are interested in going back to work to learn more about their experiencesand feelings during this often exciting and stressful time. For anyone in this situation, its common to wonder how other people handle going through the same thing. The responses to this survey offer interesting insights into this unique experience.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIn this wide-ranging survey, weasked SAH parents about how much time theyve spent out of the workforce (and how much theythoughttheyd spend) their reasons for becoming SAH parents and deciding to return to work whether theyve been doing any work-related activities while staying at home to raise children what sorts of work arrangements theyd prefer, and what their job search strategies will be for their return to the professional workforce. This survey also corresponds with anew resource weve created at FlexJobs to help stay-at-home moms (and dads) return to work through jobs with flexible work options. Our comprehensive guide covers everything from the experiences of other moms whove returned to work to job options to resumes, cover letters, bewerbungsinterviews, and networking advice specifically for stay-at-home parents. And its all with flexible and remote jobs in mindSurvey Results Stay-at-Home Parents on Exiting and Re-entering the WorkforceHow Much Time They Thought Theyd Take Vs. How Much Theyve TakenOne of the most interesting results of this survey is the comparison between how much time SAH parents thought theyd take when they exited the workforce versus how much time theyve actually taken.58% of SAH parents have taken more time away from work than expected.39% took a lot more time out of th eir careers than expected.Only 6% reportedly took less time than they expected. When they first went on leave, 27% of SAH parents werent sure at the beginning of leave how long theyd actually stay home. Twenty-two percent thought theyd take less than one year 23% anticipated 1-2 years away from work 14% planned for 2-5 years off 14% planned to take more than 5 years away from the workforce.Careers Before Kids and Staying Connected AfterThe survey also asked respondents about their careers before kids. When asked to describe their career levels, 9% said entry-level, 55% said experienced, 24% said manager-level, and 10% said, senior-level manager. That means that 34% of SAH parents opted out of manager-level or higher-level jobsThe top career fields of the SAH parents surveyed includedAdministrative 23%Data Entry 22%Customer tafelgeschirr 21%Education Training 15%Medical Health 13%Accounting Finance 12%Writing 12%Project Management 10%Marketing 10%Youth Children 9%Fifty-three percen t of SAH parents said they left paid full-time work entirely once they had kids and 7% left part-time jobs.ButSAH parents, on the whole, stayed committed to re-entering the workforce 76% stayed connected to their careers in some way, while only 24% completely disconnected from their previous careers. How did SAH parents stay connected to their careers? Fifty-two percent stayed in contact with colleagues and coworkers, 32% kept up with industry or professional news, 21% followed career-related experts on social media, and 17% learned new software and technology.Reasons for Exiting the Workforce After Becoming a ParentAll of the people surveyed worked before having children, but their reasons for leaving the workforce after becoming parents varied. Besides wanting to stay at home with their kids (65%),inflexible work arrangements and poor child-care options were the two biggest factorsin their decision to stay out of the workforce.I wanted to stay home with my kids 65%I wanted to conti nue working, but my job was too inflexible to accommodate my needs as a working parent 36%It wasnt possible to find affordable or quality child care 25%It made sense financially because my partners salary was higher 21%I was laid off from my job 13%My child(ren) had special needs that necessitated my staying home 12%Other reasons included relocation, homeschooling, their own personal health issues, and retirement.Staying Active While Staying at HomeWhile raising children is, of course, one of the most active roles out there, survey respondents have also participated in a number of activities during their time as SAH parents.Earning supplemental incomeFreelance projects (gigs or side projects) 34%MLM (multi-level marketing) sales like jewelry, cosmetics, clothing, etc. 11%Selling self-made crafts 5%Child care for others 7%Getting really good at certain skillsJuggling multiple competing priorities or multitasking (80%), problem-solving (78%), prioritizing (76%), time management (71%), organization (70%), communication (66%), and conflict resolution (63%).VolunteeringIn their child(ren)s classroom or school 70%At a local community nonprofit or charity 48%With the parent-teacher organization (PTO) or other school committees 32%At a virtual nonprofit or charity 14%Why Stay-at-Home Parents Return to WorkWhileincome is the primary motivation for SAH parents to return to work(85% said they want to earn income for their families), there are several important underlying factors that necessitate these returns. My family needs the income 56%I enjoy working and want to get back to my profession 45%My kids are less dependent now 40%I want to start a business 19%I became interested in a new career 13%Difficult life circumstances also play a roleIm experiencing a separation or divorce from my spouse 7%My spouse lost his or her job or is now unemployed 3%I experienced the loss of my spouse 2%One particular concern surrounds performing dual roles as parent and professional. We as ked respondents if they believed that they could be both a great professional and a great parent.A full 70% said yes, it isnt easy but they feel they can be both. Another 27% are hopeful they can be great in both areas. Only 3% said no, that something has to give in your professional or parental roles- you cant be great at both. The Ideal Return-to-Work Situation Flexible WorkSAH parents seem to be open to the possibilities in their return to work. A majority, 59%, said theyre open to changing careers, while 14% plan topursue a different career.Only 10% plan to return to their previous careers.More are interested in freelancing (40%) than being an employee (21%).Remote work is definitely the preferred work location of SAH parents only 13% want to work in an office or on-site, whereas90% want to work remotely (from home). When asked about their ideal work schedule, only 30% said theyd want to work full-time hours (40+ hours per week).Part-time hours are preferred (64%), as are flexible schedules (76%).Alternative hours are also in-demand with 31% of SAH parents interested in working outside traditional business hours. Sixty-seven percent would ideally like to work somewhere between 20 and 39 hours per week. What the Return to Work Will Be LikeEighty-eight percent of SAH parents are somewhat or very concerned about re-entering the workforce. Only 9% are not at all concerned. The good news is that the majority, 68%, know another stay-at-home parent whos gone back to work. Former NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Discusses Space Explorations Future at the Roe Lecture

Former NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Discusses Space Explorations Future at the Roe Lecture Former NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Discusses Space Explorations Future at the Roe Lecture Former NASA Administrator Charles Bolden Discusses Space Explorations Future at the Roe Lecture Charles Bolden, the recipient of the 2019 Ralph Coats Roe Medal, discussed his experiences as a NASA Administrator and astronaut during his lecture, Humanitys Journey of Exploration.During his presentation of the Ralph Coats Roe Lecture on June 2 at the ASME Annual Meeting in Orlando, Fla., retired Major General Charles F. Bolden, Jr., shared the thoughts and insights he gained on the progression of human space flight during his 14 years of experience as an astronaut and two terms as NASA Administrator during President Barack Obamas administration.Bolden, this years recipient of the ASME Ralph Coats Roe Medal, was honored with the award for his outstanding leadership of Americas aeronautics and space programs for courageous service in the fight to preserve freedom and liberty and for dedication as a role model, inspiring others through words and actions. Established in 1972, the Ralph Coats Roe Medal recognizes outstanding contributions toward a better public understanding and appreciation of the engineers worth to contemporary society. Charles Bolden described space exploration as one of the most important tools this generation will use to bring about the better future that we all deserve during the Roe Lecture at the ASME Annual Meeting.Following introductions by ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile, 2018-2019 ASME President Said Jahanmir and ASME Foundation Chair Tom Pestorius, Bolden observed toward the beginning of his speech that as someone who has been fortunate enough to view Earth from space, the planet from that perspective can appear borderless, tranquil and trouble-free.I came here tonight to tell you that our planet does need you, however Bolden continued, addressing the engineers in attendance. We need your leadership. We need your ingenuity. We need your imagination. We need increased international cooperation and collaboration and we need your deliberate, dedicated focus on the important issues of diversity, inclusion and equity. While at NASA, we attempted to focus like a laser on making the agency the best place to work in the federal government by putting deliberate effort into these three challenges. Following his lecture, Charles Bolden (left) fielded some questions from the audience during a QA session with ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile. After sharing with the audience his belief that space exploration is one of the most important tools this generation will use to bring about the better future that we all deserve, Bolden went on to talk about the significant role he felt the International Space Station (ISS) held in the chronicles of space exploration since tens of thousands of people from 15 countries have been responsible for the construction and operation of the space station over the past two decades.Today, a child who is 18 years old or younger has lived every single day of his or her life while human beings from multiple countries are living and working together in space aboard the International Space Station, Bolden said. Even in the few times when weve gone down to two crew members, its been at least one Russian and one American. I still maintain that the Space Station ought to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. The incredible science being conducted onboard every single day continues to inform and make life better here on Planet Earth. (Left to right) ASME Foundation Chair Tom Pestorius, ASME Executive Director/CEO Tom Costabile, 2019 Roe Medal Winner Charles Bolden, 2018-2019 ASME President Said Jahanmir and 2016-2017 ASME President Keith Roe at the Roe Lecture.Bolden, an astronaut who spent more than 680 hours in space during four spac e shuttle missions, later discussed the United States decision to phase out the space shuttle program, following the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, in favor of pursuing new commercial partnerships with private industry to transport cargo and people to low Earth orbit. He then recounted President Obamas April 2010 speech in Cape Canaveral, Fla., which Bolden described as a major space policy address. During the speech, Bolden said, the president laid out a plan to replace our unsustainable exploration trajectory with a clear, affordable and financially sustainable way forward. In that speech, President Obama called for expanding robotic exploration of the solar system and this direction has continued under our current president.President Obama also asked NASA to proceed with the development of the next-generation James Webb Space Telescope, which is expected to be launched early next year, and charged the agency with leading the International Space Station partners to extend op erations of the space station until at least 2024. In addition, the president stepped up NASAs Earth Science research program with the aim of developing a better understanding of the planet and climate change in particular. The ultimate goal of NASAs current space exploration plan, A Journey to the Moon and on to Mars, is to send astronauts back to the moon during the 2020s and then to Mars during the following decade, Bolden said. To that end, the space agency expects to work with commercial, international and non-traditional partners in the development of rockets, spacecraft and the related technology necessary to realize this ambitious objective.Today, nine years after President Obama challenged NASA to send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s, we are closer to sending human beings back to the moon and on to the Red Planet than ever before in history, Bolden said. One of the keys to our success in achieving these ever-changing goals is the emergence of a robust, viable commercial spa ce program. One possible barrier to achieving these goals as effectively as possible is NASAs current inability to work with the Chinese Space Agency on human space flight, which is the result of a 2011 Congressional ban on bilateral cooperation between NASA and China.Theres a tangible sense I get as I travel and meet folks that space exploration is in vogue now, Bolden observed. This coolness factor is what inspires young kids to want to study science or write a science fiction story and all these things make a difference. Inclusion of the Chinese into our team of innovators and explorers, I think, will allow us to make an even bigger difference. In keeping with this years anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, Bolden told the engrossed audience, I truly believe the sort of future I laid out is within our grasp in this 50th anniversary year of humanitys first landing on the moon. Just think of what it will be like when youre with your loved ones watching the first astronauts from E arth land on Mars. I plead with you to join me in pursuit of this vision and to help us to continue to turn science fiction into science fact and make the impossible possible.

Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful an d the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Wanna Get Noticed Dont Just Rely on Job Boards

Wanna Get Noticed Dont Just Rely on Job BoardsWanna Get Noticed? Dont Just Rely on Job BoardsWanna Get Noticed Dont Just Rely on Job BoardsNo, Im not suggesting that you stop using job boards to find a job (how silly would that be?). Im simply suggesting there might be a better way to apply to the jobs you find on those big job boards. With this alternate method, youll improve your chances of getting your resume and cover letter into the employers hands in a way that gets you noticed.Heres a little-known fact about the application system on major job boards The information on your uploaded resume often gets jumbled by the time it reaches the employer. Job board systems digest the information on your resume, then spit it out in an order that doesnt necessarily match what you thought you sent. I learned this when I applied for my first job using a major job board. I couldnt believe the mess of text the employer was referring to during the interview. What had once been my pretty, neat r esume had become an unattractive, plain tiny text, huge-margin, out-of-order printout. To avoid that mess, I recommend bypassing the job board application system altogether. Use the job boards to find a job you want to apply for, but then search for the company on Google and landsee if the same job is posted on the company website. You can also use a site like LinkUp.com, a job board that searches only for jobs listed on company websites. If you can find the job, you can usually find out how the employer wants you to apply (like through an internal job application system, email, fax, and/or a mailing address).Thisapproach will increase your chances of getting hired byA Ensuring the employer gets the nice version of your resume that you worked so hard to create, andB Impressing the employer with your drive and motivation to find a better way to apply. If you took the time to research the job, then you probably took the time to learn something about the company, too. Bonus pointsOne ca veat If an employer indicates specifically that you must apply through the job board, then you had better do it their way. Otherwise, you give the impression that you cant follow directions.

How to have more energy 3 powerful secrets from research

How to have mora energy 3 powerful secrets from researchHow to have mora energy 3 powerful secrets from researchThe world might be all go-go-go but that doesnt mean we areWhen Gallup researcher Tom Rath surveyed 10,000 people only 11% said they felt like they had a lot of energy.FromAre You Fully Charged? When we surveyed mora than 10,000 people to see how they were doing across these three areas, we found that most people struggle on a daily basis. For example, when we asked them to think about their entire day yesterday, a mere 11 percent reported having a great absprache of energy.Luckily, Tom and his team didnt go take a nap. Instead, they pored over studies and talked to experts to get some answers on why renewable energy is a big thing everywhere but inside ur bodies.FromAre You Fully Charged? To discover what creates a full charge, my team and I reviewed countless articles and academic studies, and interviewed some of the worlds leading social scientists. We identified and catal ogued more than 2,600 ideas for improving daily experience. They found there were three factors that separated your supercharged days from your low battery ones.Tom summed up their results in his book,Are You Fully Charged? The 3 Keys to Energizing Your Work and Life. Were going to look at some of what he found and learn how to have more energy.Alrighty, lets get to itMeaningEverybody wants happiness - but that little bugger can be quite elusive and fleeting. As Viktor Frankl once said, Happiness canbedrngnislage be pursued it must ensue. One must have a reason to be happy. But if we seek meaning in life, we often get happiness as a bonus. So whats meaning? It comes down to doing stuff that benefits other people.Research shows what makes us happy in the moment is often kindaselfish. And heres where things get a little weirdBecause neuroscience studies demonstrate that while focusing on meaning ends up making us happier, pursuing our own happiness can make us - believe it or not - unha ppy.FromAre You Fully Charged?A 2014 study followed a group of teenagers for a full year to see how their brains reacted to self-fulfilling (hedonic) acts versus acts that created meaning (eudaimonic) using fMRI scans and questionnaires. While the participants were in the fMRI scanner, researchers posed scenarios to them about keeping money for themselves versus donating it to their families. The researchers also followed up at the end of the year to review any changes from the teens baseline levels of depressive symptoms. The results revealed that teenagers who had the greatest brain response to meaningful actions had the greatest declines in depressive symptoms over time. In contrast, teens who made more self-fulfilling decisions were more likely to have an increase in risk of depression. Meaningful activity essentially protects the brain from dark thoughts. But happiness feels good, right? Isnt that why they call ithappiness? Well, oddly enough, it doesnt feel good to your body if theres no meaning. The bodies ofpeople who are cheery but lack anything deeper actually show higher levels of inflammation.Happiness without meaning is the physical equivalent of being stressed out.FromAre You Fully Charged? When participants in a study led by the University of North Carolinas Barbara Fredrickson were happy but lacked meaning in their lives (defined as pursuing a purpose bigger than self), they exhibited a stress-related gene pattern that is known to activate an inflammatory response. They had the saatkorn gene expression pattern as people dealing with constant adversity have. Over time, this pattern leads to chronic inflammation, which is related to a host of illnesses, like heart disease and cancer. Fredrickson noted, Empty positive emotions are about as good for you as adversity. Unfortunately, 75 percent of participants in Fredricksons study fell into this category their happiness levels outpaced their levels of meaningfulness. In contrast, participants who had meaning in their lives, whether or not they characterized themselves as happy, showed a deactivation in this stress-related gene pattern. And when we feel were making progress in meaningful work were 250% more likely to be engaged at the office.FromAre You Fully Charged? My research suggests that the odds of being completely engaged in your job increase by more than 250 percent if you spend a lot of time doing meaningful work throughout the day. To discover what leads to better work and lives, Harvard Business Schools Teresa Amabile and psychologist Steven Kramer sorted through 12,000 diary entries and 64,000 specific workday events collected from 238 workers across seven different companies. Their conclusion from this research was Of all the events that engage people at work, the single most important - by far - is simply making progress in meaningful work.Okay, so how do we find this meaning stuff? Well, you dont find it. You create it.Research in the area of job-crafting shows th at if we tweak how we work, we can enjoy a lot more meaning in those hours at the office. What activities give you a feeling of engagement, warmth and pride in what you do? Find a way to spend more of your time doing that stuff and less of the other stuff. Talk to your boss and co-workers to try and shift duties around if you need to.And speaking of co-workers, who makes you feel good versus stressed? How can you spend more time with the former and less time with the latter?Small changes in how you work can make a big difference in how you feel.FromAre You Fully Charged? This research, led by a team at the University of Michigan, found that you can craft existing jobs to significantly improve the meaningfulness of your work. Effective job crafting starts by looking at how much time you dedicate to specific tasks that give you energy each day. It also entails looking at the way your relationships at work and your perception of what you do create meaning for others.I know what some peop le are thinking they cant change a thing about what they do or who they work with. No, youre not screwed. The most important factor here is perception - how youfeel. And everyones work benefits someone else. By thinking more about who your work helps and making a little effort to see those results, you can dramatically increase the level of meaning in your life. When university call center employees who were asking alums for donations got to meet the scholarship students who benefited from their work, productivity, enthusiasm and the amount of money coming inwent up dramatically. Were often focused on our well-being above all else. Put a little more effort into your well-doingand your well-being often takes care of itself.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my bestselling bookhere.)Okay, so meaning can help fill your tank. What else do we need?InteractionWhen Tom looked at the research something became quite clear across the board, people greatly underesti mated how much little daily interactions affected how they felt. You may dream about winning Oscars or slaying dragons but those wont be the moments in life that youll look back on most fondly. People consistently said that the most positive times in their lives all had to do with belonging and connecting - not achieving.FromAre You Fully Charged? When researchers ask people to reconstruct the most positive and negative experiences of their lives, they consistently describe social events as their most influential memories over a lifetime. Across a series of four studies, participants recalled the moments when close relationships began or ended, when they fell in love, or when the loss of another rolle broke their heart. One of the studys co-authors summarized, In short, it was the moments of connecting to others that touched peoples lives the most. Participants consistently rated events with other people as more influential than solitary experiences. Independent events or individual achievements, such as winning awards or completing tasks, did not affect participants the most. Instead, the researchers concluded, social experiences gain their emotional punch from our need to belong. And this is true day-to-day as well. When you have positive interactions with people throughout the day your aussicht of feeling good quadruples.FromAre You Fully Charged? My teams research found that people who reported having great interactions throughout the day were nearly four times as likely to have very high well-being.How can you guarantee that? Make close pals at work. But how do you know if yourereallyfriends with someone at the office?Ask yourself how much you share your personal problems with each other.FromAre You Fully Charged?Gallups research has shown that people who have best friend-caliber relationships at work are seven times as likely to be engaged in their job. When researchers asked employees how they formed a close workplace friendship, they found that it takes ab out a year for an acquaintance at work to become a friend. The telltale sign of a friendship between co-workers was the amount of time they spent talking about topics unrelated to work. Then the next phase, a very close friendship at work, was marked by something less intuitive sharing problems from one anothers personal and work lives. This self-disclosure was the central teil of the strongest relationships. And how do you improveallof your interactions? Be 80% positive. Make sure 4 out of 5 things you say or do are about the good stuff, not the bad stuff.FromAre You Fully Charged? We need at least three to five positive interactions to outweigh every one negative exchange. Bad moments simply outweigh good ones. Whether youre having a one-on-one conversation with a colleague or a group discussion, keep this simple shortcut in mind At least 80 percent of your conversations should be focused on whats going right. Workplaces, for example, often have this backward. During performance rev iews, managers routinely spend 80 percent of their time on weaknesses, gaps, and areas for improvement.Yeah, I know evaluating and counting interactions isnt very realistic. Fine. Fine. Then just take a second and do your best to make someone smile. Yes, its that simple.FromAre You Fully Charged?according to a recent study from Stanford and Harvard Business School. As part of a series of experiments, one group of participants was assigned a goal of making another person happy, while a second group was told to simply do something that made another person smile. The results showed that small, straightforward actions to make someone smile were far more effective than broad, nebulous attempts to improve overall happiness. The studys authors wrote, Acts with small, concrete goals designed to improve the well-being of others are more likely to lead to happiness for the giver than are acts with large, abstract goals - despite peoples intuitions to the contrary.(To learn the two-word morni ng ritual that will make you happy all day, clickhere.)So your life is meaningful and your life is filled with positive interactions What else? Well, doing things to make sure your life doesnt end prematurely is quite powerful tooHealthEat better. Move more. Sleep longer and deeper. Thats what it takes. We talk a lot about eating too much, but turns out the quality of food is important too. Just because you dont eat too many Pop-Tarts doesnt mean you should be eating Pop-Tarts.FromAre You Fully Charged?A landmark Harvard University study that tracked more than 100,000 people over two decades makes it clear that the quality of what you eat is more important than quantity alone. This study revealed that the types of food you consume influence your health more than your total caloric intake. Consuming 300 calories worth of spinach is not the same as eating a sugar cookie with 300 calories. Yet most people I speak with continue to believe the age-old myth of everything in moderation. As the studys lead author Dariush Mozaffarian put it, the moderation myth is really just an excuse to eat whatever we want. And the type of food you eat also affects your mood. Studies show processed foods with lots of sugar increase laziness. Trans-fats increased aggression. And comfort foods dont comfort you - they can make you depressed.FromAre You Fully Charged?A 2014 study suggests that highly processed foods with added sugar may also contribute to laziness. One experiment on this topic found that people who consumed more trans-fatty acids were more aggressive and irritable as a result. These findings were so pronounced, one of the researchers suggested that places like schools and prisons should reconsider serving unhealthy foods because they might be dangerous for others in these environments. Even comfort foods like baked goods actually have the opposite effect of comfort and are likely to make people more depressed. Most people now spend more hours sitting (9.3 on average) than they do sleeping. The NIH says that even if you did 7 hours a week of exercise that much time on your butt still doubles your chance of a heart attack.Get up and move. Right now. Ill still be here when you get back, I promise.FromAre You Fully Charged?A 2014 study estimates that every two hours of sitting cancels out the benefits of 20 minutes of exercise. When researchers from the National Institutes of Health followed more than 200,000 people for a decade, they found that even seven hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity a week was not enough to protect against the hazards of excessive sitting. Even the most active group they studied - people who exercised more than seven hours every week - had a 50 percent greater risk of death and doubled their odds of dying from heart disease if they were also in the group that sat the most throughout the day. When people exercised moderately for 20 minutes they felt better for up to12 hours. So get to the gym early and you can boost your mood for almost the entire day.FromAre You Fully Charged? When researchers assigned one group of participants in a study to do 20 minutes of a moderate-intensity workout, they found that the participants had a much better mood immediately following the exercise than a control group who did not exercise. What surprised researchers was how long this increase in mood lasted. Those who exercised continued to feel better throughout the day. Even two, four, eight, and twelve hours later, they were in a better mood than the control group.Everybody knows aboutAnders Ericssonsresearch that showed it takes (roughly) 10,000 hours to become an expert at something. But thats not all the study showed. The experts also slept. A lot.Yes, I literally just said that spending more time in bed is one of the keys to expertise. Youre welcome.FromAre You Fully Charged? While many concentrated on his findings relevant to 10,000 hours of deliberate practice, the other factor that differentiated top perfo rmance was sleep. The best performers in these studies slept for 8 hours and 36 minutes per night on average. The average American, in contrast, gets just 6 hours and 51 minutes of sleep on weeknights. But its not merely an issue of sleeping more. You also want to sleepwell. When people cut back on hours of sleep they tripled their likelihood of getting sick. But people who had poor quality sleep more thanquintupledtheir chance of catching a cold.FromAre You Fully Charged?Study participants who had lower sleep efficiency over the 14-day period before exposure to the rhinovirus were 5.5 times as likely to develop a cold. This compares with the threefold increase based solely on duration of sleep. As with other areas of health, quality of sleep beats quantity by a wide margin.(To learn the secret to never being frustrated again, clickhere.)Okay, weve covered a lot. Time to round it all up and learn one more thing you can do to help all of the above boost your energy even moreSum UpThis is how to have more energyMeaning Do things that benefit others. (It doesnthaveto be me but I appreciate the thought.)Interaction Be 80% positive. (I am 99% certain of this.)Health Eat better, move more, sleep long and well. (And if I did all those things Id have enough energy to write a funnier joke here.Blogger, heal thyself.)Want to turn the above into habits that stick? Then help someone else start doing them. Supporting others in their goals isnt just awfully neighborly of you it also makes you more likely to achieve them yourself.FromAre You Fully Charged?Research from one of the largest clinical trials in alcohol research found that 40 percent of alcoholics who helped other alcoholics during their recovery were successful and avoided drinking in the year following treatment. In contrast, only 22 percent of those who did not help others were able to stay sober. Helping someone else with a similar problem nearly doubled success rates. A subsequent study found that 94 percent o f alcoholics who helped other alcoholics experienced lower levels of depression. So being healthy produces energy. And part of that means good sleep. But other than those two, did you notice what everything else has in common? To have more energy, dont do less. Domore. Of the right things. And for you to feel more alive, you shouldnt focus on you.
